I don't know what's wrong with my tank. My betta has been glass surfing non stop recently since my last water change (3 days ago) the only things I've done since then is try adding tannins to the tank which shouldn't be a problem. Especially since I've been doing it slowly. I don't know if he just wants more hiding spots or what but I feel terrible about it 🙁 someone please give me advice. The only other inhabitants in this tank are 3 kuhli loaches and 2 oto cats which seem to coexist well with my betta fish.

  1. I would say add more hiding spots, and that it could be the tank mates. Just because they coexist does not mean it is not stressing him out – I am experiencing this right now with mine. Also is it possible at all that he can see his reflection in the glass from the light? I had a set-up a while ago where that happened and it lead to my fish constantly swimming around the glass trying to attack himself.

your tank looks quite bright compared to the surrounding room which would make the glass almost a mirror to him maybe try changing the balance between the two?

A few things come to mind. Beautiful tank I must first say!!
1- it’s very bright. Try dimming the lights
2-he’s stressed out from the tank mates, give them their own home
3-he needs places to rest near the surface
4-the current temp is quite a bit lower than they need. Bring it up to around 80*

As someone stated, just because they co-exist doesn’t mean that they aren’t stressed.
