First betta. Got him in December. Heās in a 5 gallon tank. He used to have a fake plastic bonsai tree but I took it out 2 days ago because I noticed his fins have been looking tattered. I added two small live anubias plans instead, a second little hiding cave, and a silk leaf hammock.
He eats fine, heās active, he has a heater that stays between 78-81°F. I feed him 4 pellets twice a day. He has a tank light that I turn on around 9 am and off at night when I go to bed.
The tank heās in has a built in carbon filter. Itās the top fin easy clean 5gal. Iām wondering if the vents against the back are cutting up his fins? He used to rest up with his fins flat against them.
I just got strips to test the water today. The levels seem ok. The only one that was hard to read was the water hardness level. I only use the gallon of betta water at petsmart to change some of his water. When I first put him in this tank I used tap water but added the water conditioning drops and left it alone with the filter running for 24+hrs. He has aquarium sand as his substrate that I also washed with hot water before adding it.
I really love him a lot and want to make sure heās ok, any advice is appreciated. š

It doesnāt really look like fin rot. He may possibly be fin nipping. My previous betta with very long fins did this a lot
