I just set up my fishtank after moving house and have it on this bookcase – there's a very slight bow in the wood.

  1. That is not meant to hold the weight of a fish tank. A disaster waiting to happen. Especially that there is already a slight bow as you say.

Take it off of there before the inevitable happens

  2. Yea. Is the shelving at least anchored to the wall? Major tip risk with a large mass on top. The top board is transferring that load in shear to whatever fasteners hold it to the vertical boards. It is uncentered and putting bending loads into that lateral as well bowing the wood. Any spillage is going to possibly damage the shelf and corrode the fasteners over time weakening them. Maintenance is going to be a huge task, with a step ladder or something, and any water that spillage is going to ruin your book collection.

Just take it down and set it up on the floor until you come up with something else. Or put it on the kitchen counter or something. Just a bad idea in general.

  3. So if the wood was sitting on top of the vertical pieces I wouldn’t be stressed….but…That shelf is sammiched between them. Can you easily pull a piece of meat between two pieces of bread with enough force? Yes. If it’s laying over top of the two pieces of bread can you do it? Yes, but with a lot of force to get it to go between the pieces first.
