I've snelled #4 hooks before with 35lb fluoro following this video but when it comes to anything below about #8 I just can't get a good grip on hook and line, my fingers are massive and everything slips, I wasted so much line trying.

I don't have a small vise but maybe I can grip them with hemostat and put that in a big vise?

  1. If you have problems doing it, perhaps you can try a hook tying tool. It’s basically a piece of plastic with a metal small rod thing, where you insert the hook in, tie on the rod (it’s bigger, so it makes it easier), then pull the plastic so that the line goes to the hook.

I have had massive success tying snell’s in this way..

I have a cheap fly tying vise I use as well as a set of fine tip pliers to pull it all tight. Last year I experimented with a drop of super glue in the knot. Worked well but I don’t think it’s really necessary.

Word of caution, it’s possible to tie this knot backwards in so that the hooks sits at an angle. How the line goes through the eye the first time is important but I don’t recall that the video maker mentions this.
