I recently upsized to a 250L tank that I bought second hand. The seller told me there was a small crack that he had repaired a while ago, and he said he hadn’t had any issues with it since. The tank was in use after the repair, so he seemed confident that the glue/silicone would hold. He also had a large collection of aquariums and much more experience than I do, so I trusted his judgment.

However, after reading some posts about cracks in aquarium tanks, I’ve started to feel concerned. The crack isn’t shaped in a way where it’s spreading across, so maybe it’s fine..? Are cracks always an unfixable no-go? I‘d really appreciate your input.

small or big it doesn’t matter, weak point like that can spread to the wall panel in less than a second.

  2. If its just the turtle lower water level to below that Chip/crack

Personally would not use it full of water

Edit: I should not have been so vague and leave out one important part. The lowering of the water was just until you can replace the aquarium
    I apologize

  3. If that damage results in a leak without that goop on it, I’d be replacing that thing YESTERDAY.

Yeah, chips are typically less serious than cracks (which usually get bigger) but that’s pretty bad damage, and I’d not trust it.

  4. Tear? I dont think glass does that a small fracture even tho it isnt small is prob what you meant

  5. Small chips in upper corners/edges with no cracks coming off of them I usually still trust, but this being huge and mid-way down would scare me too much to have anywhere but a concrete floor garage or basement for minimal damage in case it does go. It might be fine indefinitely, or it might not be and your floors will be destroyed when in bursts.

That’s a small crack in the same way the titanic had a small hole in the side. that chip is a disaster waiting to happen imo.

  7. look up the cost of a new 250L tank. Then look up the cost of repairing 250L of water damage to your house/apt. Then buy a new tank.

  8. I would keep that tank in a basement by a floor drain but certainly not upstairs in the nice part of the house

You got scammed bro, sorry. Never buy a tank with a crack in it unless you’re just doing a terrarium.

  10. Right now:

Drain water to below crack level.

Get another tank. That’s an insurance claim waiting to happen.

  11. As someone who has had to replace a floor due to water damage from a tank, I just shuddered… water damage < new tank

  12. Get a replacement on Facebook marketplace. It’ll be cheaper than buying new, but you need to replace that asap. I’d lower the water level now.

I would be very suspicious of a “repair” of this kind of damage. And that isn’t a repair by any definition.

  14. It’s more of a delamination/flake than a crack. Flakes don’t propagate like cracks do, but it does negatively affect the structural integrity of the glass. Hard to know if this lasts another 20 years or 20 days
