Hey everyone, first time betta owner! i want you all to meet what I believe to be my half-moon mustard gas betta! (don't know for sure so lmk) His name is domochevski and I've had him for almost two months now! He's in a planted 10 gallon tank with a mystery snail named Iko, 3 nerite snails, and 5 white amano shrimp. He's an absolute baby boy and i love him more than anything! Imma talk about my tank below and would love and appreciate any feedback or tips or comments! (i put my questions at the bottom in case this is way too much to read)

The betta (domochevski) is super active, he loves to dart around the tank and doesn't like any betta hammocks ive given him. He loves chilling in the plants and swimming through the roots of the water lettuce. He also interacts with me when i approach the tank through the glass. I don't think I've ever seen him flair at me or anything at all yet, wondering if that is a bad thing? He's made a bunch of bubble nests and has completely transformed color wise. He started getting these turquoise blue shimmery scales and the tips of his fins are turning this deep blue almost black. He also got bigger and his fins and tail got longer and fluffier. I am still unsure of how much and often to feed him, and am worried he may be too skinny. (my feeding schedule is 2 topfin floating betta pellets every weekday morning, fasting saturday, and a bloodworm on sunday)

The shrimp were there first, it was originally going to be a community tank for them with snails and maybe some ottos, but I was at petco getting supplies once (new filter cartridges) and i saw him in a cup and he looked so miserable that I couldn't help myself. I am actively looking for a different tank to start for the shrimp because domochevski does like to chase them around (never nips at them though I think he just likes to play with them) but it does stress them out a bit. They have plenty spots to hide so they now only really come out at night when domochevski is asleep.

The snails are chillen, domochevski doesnt bother them at all except the occasional hang out and watch, they love all the algae that grows in the sunlight (i have the tank by a window) and the biofilm that grows on the drift wood. I dont feed them anything, and I'm wondering if I should? i have algae waffers that i give as treats to my mystery snails in my goldfish tank once a month (i break them into pieces and hand them to the snails directly) and sometimes also a small piece of blanched zuchinni, but again very unsure about food for snails. (the other day i found a hitchhiker baby snail i could not identify in the tank also but havent seen him since he was so tiny)

As for the tank itself, the water parameters have never been less than perfect. No nitrates or amonia ever, and i check parameters every week. there is a heater that keeps the temp between 71-75 (i have a thermometer i look at daily) And a filter meant for a 20 gallon tank that adds a small disturbance to the water surfaces but not enough to agitate domochevski. (i forgot what filter i got cuz i forget everything and ive been struggling to find replacement cartridges maybe i will reverse image google search it) but i have been washing the filter cartridge every week when i do the water change (usually 10% not counting the water that evaporates which is a lot) I have a monstera, two spider plant babies, some pothos cuttings, hornwort, java fern, water lettuce, and java moss for plants, and one other plant that i found in there once i can not identify.

Okay now my QUESTIONS:

– how much and how often do i feed my betta? should i be feeding my snails?

– is it okay that my betta never flares?

– can i add any other fish to the tank or is it overstocked (especially if i remove the shrimp)? i was thinking otto's or some other small bottom feeder? and i have a tank to relocate them to if domochevski starts to mess with them.

– do i keep trying with the betta hammocks? or is the space adequate enough to find alternative resting spots?

– lmk if you recognize where the name domochevski and iko come from 😉

thank you for reading all this!!!
