I just bought my favourite fish, they happened to be in a new pet store, they couldn't possible have ICK!
I introduced them to my first 75 gallon tank, I won't get ICK!
I dont have a hospital tank big enough for these fish, they will be fine in the community tank, they look Healthy and lively, I won't get ICK.
I woke up this morning and seen my favourite fish, rubbing on the rock, oh he's got an ITCH!!!
Upon futher inspection, he's got ICK!
I looked at the other fish……… they……….got..
……….ICK
insert dramtic crying episode here
check parameters
"Ammonia Present….."
cries more
50% water change, sand vacc for parasites (ICK)
dosed tank with aquarium salts
dosed beneficial bacteria
bumped up heat to 85 to shorten lifespan of ICK parasite that attached to body.
Im going to buy stronger treatment if this doesnt work. Advice?

Vacuuming the gravel won’t do anything for the ich parasite, they need a host so they really only thrive off the fish. Hopefully you don’t crank temp up too fast. I’d get some actually ich medication to medicate the whole tank. Careful with adding too much salt or you’ll end up with a brackish tank.
I had it come in on some
Neon’s. Don’t have an isolation tank for new fish / don’t want one. I bumped my heater to 85, added some stress guard and that’s it. It was gone in less than 2 weeks. And better almost overnight. Every fish in the community tank had it. Only lost 2 fish out of 40. I’m in Canada so we don’t have the medicines like the states. Some
Plants didn’t like the heat, but they ended up bouncing back.
In recent years I’ve only had one ick outbreak, and I just fixed it with temperature. 87 degrees for about 4 days, then slowly brought it back down, about a degree per day.
The shrimp actually really seemed to like it. Everyone else was fine.
Garlic. It’s great. You can grind a clove into juice, soak the fish food in it for a while and feed to the fish. You can also mash the garlic and feed the fish the garlic. I fed my tank once with it and the disease cleared in less than a week
Good luck with treating them!
Last thursday I came home from work and on my way to the kitchen I saw my fish acting weird in the tank. I came closer and my black neons where all coverd in white spots. I think I got ick with rummynose tetras I bought a week before, probably they got it earlier but I was so busy with work that I didn’t really have time for my fish plus they’re white so it’s harder to see. As soon as I noticed I RAN to the store and got some meds, random ones. They got a quick water change, a dose of meds and sauna treatment and 3 days later they were almost healed. Sadly I lost a few in the process though… Luckily not that many.
Ich-X and a slight temp increase. Ich-x won’t harm invertebrates or plants either.
Doesn’t look like ich to me, more like epistylis
Turn the tank temp up to to the highest temperature your fish can handle, usually about 85 degrees f. This speeds up the life cycle of ich. Leave it at that temp for a month to ensure all the parasites have died off. Ive done this with out meds and worked fine
Get Ich-x. Literally all you need. Dose as instructions say. Once the dots are gone, it says to dose a few more times as what you are actually killing is the free floating microscopic parasites. The ones in the body will not be harmed as they die naturally in there to the immune system or steal enough nutrients to let go, in order to reproduce. When they let go, they are extremely vulnerable to chemical treatment.
Once the number of parasites is down the fishes immune systems should be able to naturally fight off any left.
The ammonia is also a problem, it could indicate your tank is not cycled, which would explain why the parasite is taking off. Most fish if healthy AND the number of ich parasites is relatively low can fight them off. Unless stressed of course.
Stop dosing literally anything other than ich-x. Aquarium salts do nothing for this, do a water change and get rid of that. Its not great for rams long-term either. Salt is good if they are having issues breathing or on some fish it can help with swim bladder problems. Like if you had too much Ammonia or Nitrites and theyre having trouble balancing or breathing after a water change. But again, you have a ram, they dont benefit much from it anyway.
Also, for what it’s worth, this doesnt really seem like that bad of an infection if you take action.
Put ginger powder in their food. Sounds weird but trust me it works.
At the time I had a UV filter so I used that and it worked.
Turn up the heat to 83 it will kill it. Fish will be fine. We’ve used this method multiple times
Plants are all gonna die from adding aquarium salt. U might as well pull them out before they cause another ammonia spike
Yeah, it’s pretty much inevitable, if you are in the hobby long enough, that it’s going to happen.
Especially if you buy from the big chain retailers.
Looks like epistylis, which is more lethal than ich.
You can treat both at same time to be sure.
Buy Maracyn 2 and create medicated food with it (better than dosing the water column and potentially crashing your tank’s cycle).
Use Ich-X alongside. Won’t hurt your good bacteria.
Use nox ich its formulated to be safer for plants and sensitive fish. It works good.
ps it’s ich(Ichthyophthirius multifiliis) not ick but id agree it’s pretty icky.
