In my youth, 60s and 70s, there weren’t any fly shops in my little town. We use bare hooks and caught stuff to put on the hooks. Still use live bait that way now, but I buy the bait. Use it 8wt and a 2/0 circle hook with a live shrimp. Can’t cast it but it works great drifting.

That is an isonychia mayfly. A couple different patterns mimic it pretty well but hairs ear and pheasant tails seem to catch when others won’t in rivers they are present…
