I bought a polishing pad for the filter. I left it in for 4 days to clear the algae. I had a slight persiting algae problem. Nothing extreme but more aesthetically annoying. The aquarium shop I took advice from did not mention a recommended time to keep the polishing pad in. In hindsight I should have done more research but I assumed as no time was mentioned it could be used like a filter pad!
After 4 days the fish was acting weird at top of tank. I immediately tested the water. It had no ammonia but a spike in Nitrites.
I was shocked at the levels. I took out the polishing pad and did water changes x3 over the next 2 days. It was too late.
He died today, and I feel so guilty.
Swim in peace Pinky Promise. I am sorry.

what brand was it?? fine particle media should be able to be used in addition to normal filter media, and Iโm not sure how it would cause a nitrite spike. I fear something else happened.
