I've seen several pictures such as this, where people hang fish when they're camping. While it's not clear, ostensibly the fish are left up there quite a while / not iced or frozen and the temperatures are presumably above freezing (at least no snow on the ground).

How do the fish not go bad? How long do they keep like this, and what's the method of preservation? I assume they're eating them at some point?

  1. I don’t know, but when I was fishing with my wife’s brother we just left the fish on the boat for a couple of hours after we got back before cleaning them.

They hang them up to make it simpler to gut them all at the same time, dont usually leave them hanging long enough to go bad, after gutting the usually put them on ice. They aren’t leaving them hanging for long.

Just depends on what quality of fish you enjoy when you eat it. I would not eat fish that’s been out in the sun for hours and hours. Stringer and back in the water to keep them cool if I don’t have a cooler. Bonk and bleed after catching. Right onto ice after they bleed out is my preferred method.
