Hi all, I’m an 19M and have fished for the best part of 10 years, however only ever done float, spinning and sea fishing. Recently i have inherited some fly fishing equipment which i am desperate to get out and try. However im finding the range of flys and types of line quite overwhelming and leaving me clueless what to use. Ive inherited a fly collection, a shakespeare 9ft6 rod with the reel aswell as a fee other bits and bobs.

My question is how do you decide type of line (float or sink) and what type of fly to use? Also whats a ‘dapping fly’ as i have been given a few of them (labelled)

Any advice in general for a beginner would be greatly appreciated

I am looking at fishing the lake district in the UK where I live- so the target fish will be salmon and trout.

Hi there you’ve inherited a nice set of flies to get you started. If you do a little searching you should be able to find a local fly angling club. This is where you should start, they should be able to help and guide you it can be a little overwhelming to begin with but will become much simpler given time. There is a knack to casting a fly rod and lessons or advice from an experienced angler or instructor will make all the difference. Once you learn to cast your adventure really begins. Enjoy.
