I’ve been told its a good idea to look at tanks on FBMP to save some money. General rule of thumb about $1-$2 per gallon.
Am I mistaken? I’ve consistently seen tanks up for way more than they’re worth if we’re talking $1-$2 per gallon.
These are used tanks. No warranty, no possibility of returning, often used – if not, NWT/NWOT…
I just don’t see how any of these tanks are worth retail. Once they’re off the shelf out of the store, they are no longer worth that.
Based on the laugh react on that post, I know I’m not the only one that feels this way, but It seems to be a very common thing for tanks to be +$4 per gallon…

That’s someone trying to make a quick buck from a moldy tank, I wouldn’t buy from. person with that mentality
Yeah that tank looks disgusting, you probably wouldn’t be able to even clean that 100%. You can definitely get better tanks for that price or less
I am absolutely seeing this right now, like a 10 gallon tank selling for 40 is a very annoyingly common occurrence.
Or my favorite, someone selling a hekin 6 gallon tank for 90. The ONLY thing they have in their favor is that it’s still new in-box. I JUST lowballed them and said I purchased a similar tank for 15, and I can get it out of their hair (14 week old listing) for 30.
Something I recommend is sorting by the max price point you would pay, and then type the size you want into the search (10 gallon tank for example).
Rimless tanks do not fall under the $1 per gallon category. You will need to clarify what brand it is though, as the Petco & Petsmart rimless tanks also don’t hold up to the prices of any of the more legitimate brands.
A lot of people will put their tanks on marketplace for a stupid price because they think it’s reasonable to slightly lower the price from what they originally paid for it. They’ll keep lowering it the longer it sits with no responses. The rest of the listings are all pretty reasonable. One time I saw a listing where a guy wanted $200+ for a gently used tank kit with used bottles of products or a trade for legos. No specific Legos. Just Legos. He would not accept trades for other aquarium equipment. He just wanted money or Legos in exchange for a used tank setup.
Some rimless tanks from reputable brand can be worth more, but also some people don’t understand that their used items aren’t worth nearly what they think they should be
$2/gallon doesn’t hold on what looks like a 30g rimless. However, I would never buy one. Not worth the risk. Even paying 3x that for a new tank is not prohibitive to me. It might take me a couple months to budget the money, but IMO it’s worth it to get the assurance of a new tank.
it’s rimless and apparently comes with some other stuff?
I can typically find 10-55 gallon tanks for decent prices. I just grabbed 3 5 gallons and a cubed 20 for $50, not rimless mind you, but I only care about what’s it them.
With the amount of hours it’s going to take scrubbing the mold and calcium off that tank, you’d be better off working a minimum wage job and buying a brand new rimless tank.
Whoever posted that is out their dam mind.
sometimes I think it is not worth it to get a second hand tank and then buy all the equipment and stock up on the livestock and pay all the electric and water bills just to look at a scratched up tank
hell, if I can just pay the price of a new tank but don’t need the hassle of moving and setting things up, I would gladly pay the price of a new tank to change out my functioning tank with some tiny scratches
People are idiots. That’s all ya gotta know.
That tank would be easily $200+ and it was a reef tank so it’s possible some of the buildup could just be salt which is pretty easy to clean. They’re definitely highballing a bit with the condition they’re trying to sell it in but it’s not a completely terrible deal
Bruh with that condition you have to pay me to take it home lmao
I just wouldn’t buy that. It’s clearly been through some and it’s rimless. I just don’t want to pay for water damage.
Bro it’s marketplace not Walmart. Offer this dude $20 with your first message and see if he’ll play ball.
Price aside, this tank will probably clean up very easily. Fill with water and dilute cleaning vinegar. Soak a couple of days. Then take a sponge with baking soda as an abrasive while using vinegar in a spray bottle.
Internet based market places of any sort has everybody googling what they got was worth when it was new, then knocking 10% to 15% off and making that their asking price.not just on aquarium stuff either. Everything.
Cars are the worst tho.
“(Insert make model car). 250,000 miles. Ran great before I blew the engine, needs head gasket, valves, piston rings, crankshaft, and transmission. $27,000. No low ballers. I know what I got 🤡”
I felt the same way for a while until just recently I found a 125G complete with stand, lights, driftwood, canister filters, c02, the whole shebang for $300. Great deal and I’ve heard stories of people finding even better ones. Just gotta be patient and check frequently. The good deals will get snatched up quickly, so act fast if you find something you like.
I paid $25 this weekend for a 2.5g UNS. Granted it was from someone in my local aquarium club so I knew it was in good (now that i cleaned it, perfect) condition. Basically half of retail. I’ve already got it cycling for shrimp in the near future…..
