Recently went on a 3 night/4 day fishing boat trip with mates on the Noosa river. I'm a beginner(ish) fisherman and watched plenty of videos on soft plastics and their effectiveness. purchased 5 different types of plastics (mostly zman) mix of grubs, craws and paddle tails all between 2" to 2.5" using 1/16 to 1/20 jig heads.

Day 1 using only soft plastics – caught nothing starting from sun down

Day 2 started fishing at 5.30am using soft plastics (oddly enough they were cheap temu paddle tails white 2") and caught 2 bream almost one after another. nothing else the rest of the day using just plastics including the Zmans.

Day 3 switched to small cuts of steak and landed a big catfish which was a lot of fun to reel in but yeh, it's a catfish so 😅 continued switching between meat and plastics and caught plenty of bream on the meat, nothing on the plastics.

I suppose I am just a bit surprised how much better the meat did when I have heard how well plastics can work. felt I was using the right action with slow reel and small jerk.

On the meat it was more just cast and forget.

Would love to hear others experience in similar situations.

Oh and also landed a couple Muddys of the meat which was a nice bonus, both females so released of course but nice surprise.

Yeah real bait usually works better but in scenarios where you can’t have it on you lures are a godsend. Also if the fish are super aggressive and busting on bait that’s the rare scenario where lures are better (though this is admittedly not super common)

Lures are cleaner and less hassle so they definitely have their use.
