I noticed my betta fish’s fins looking strange last night. Usually his fins don’t have those strange divots. Is this normal? He is still eating and swimming like normal, very active and curious. He swims a lot.

Tank info:

-3 gallons (I’m getting a 5 gallon soon)

-Water temp: 78

-Ammonia and Nitrites are 0

-filter and heater

—3 live plants, several fake plants, cave, decorations

  1. Are the fake plants sharp enough to catch his fins? Have you seen him attempting to bite at them? I assume it’s either the plants or fin nipping.

Is your ammonia genuinely 0? You should compare it to testing plain tap water it should be very jaune yellow,
He’s stressed, and honestly tannins are what I recommend for this, and a few Epsom salt baths will help him, this is fin rot but likely from un ideal water even though parameters can be in check if it’s uncycled, they know it isn’t a stable condition,
I noticed that if you’re feeding them in the water and it’s frozen, especially they can feel it on their gills immediately, so I reduce feeding when cycling can be ammonia, stress on the fin’s, or maybe when you got him he already had slight the slightest rot. Especially if you bought him in a cup

  3. Here is the problem with a 3 gallon tank. There’s such a small amount of water in there that you can test and the ammonia is zero and 15 minute later it could spike. Swimming room isn’t the only problem with a tank that small.
