thought I would try my hand at baitcasters. I don't even know what I did wrong!

Oops… I’ve done that 😅

Well, get to it, ride your thumb better on spool & adjust brake.

That line looks really thick

Max out the brakes until you get comfortable casting. Then you can adjust them after a while. But keep your thumb on the spool and use it as a brake.

I’ve been a spinning reel guy my entire life, I only recently learned bait cast, and let me tell you I’d rather pick out a nasty backlash than try and untie a bad wind knot. People think the bait-caster is a waste of time when it’s actually the opposite.

I’ve always had better luck with braid on bait casters. You’ll get less bird nests as long as it’s set up correctly, and when you do get them, braid is easy to untangle

I love when that happens

Not the last either

Respectfully, user error. Baitcasters require a bit more finesse, and timing.

First cast is usually when it happens or after sitting for a while. If it is 100% fluoro, you need to stretch it some first sometimes.

Honest question: what’s the advantage of a bait cast over a spinning reel. Of course I use conventional for big fish offshore. But why use this for inshore?

Replace the line with braid and learn to use your thumb on the reel. You can use a leader of mono or flouro if you like. Baitcasters are great but there’s a bit of a learning curve. I know guys who have them set up so they don’t even use their thumb but I’m not quite there.

Never used a baitcaster before, just need to throw some line on my new reel and rod and go out. I know everything about brakes and tension, I’ve seen 50+ videos on youtube, but I doubt I’ll be able to stop the spool with my thumb just before lure hits the water at least first two dozen times, practice makes perfect.

I went 15lb braid with my baitcaster, set the tension to where the lure just barely falls when you hold it out in the air and haven’t had an issue yet. You will have to play with the tension/brake every time you change lures though which is really annoying so I’ve just dedicated mine to heavier stuff like lures and weighted senko. I got a kastking Brutus baitcaster off Amazon and it’s been good for the last 2 weeks I’ve been using it.

Baitcasters can be frustrating, they are not as easy to use as a spinning reel. They are however worth learning how to use. Your best bet is to find someone that can help you in person. If you can’t, then I would recommend to find some videos on youtube to learn.
You need to learn how to fix birds’s nests, which is what you have there, and learn to balance/tune your bait caster for your lure/bait. You’ll have to tune it every time you change lures, and tune it depending if your casting into the wind or with the wind, even if it’s the same lure.
