Okay hi i didn’t really know how to tag this but this is Stevie (zissou) and i got him about 5 days ago. He’s been in this tank that’s been cycled for months now and for some reason everytime i come up to the glass he flares…. Which is like… fine! But i also read that excessive flare could cause damage. He swims around normally when i am not up close to the tank but god forbid a girl want to see her fish😔 is there anything i could do to make him not scared of me? He is so pretty and i want to see how he grows/ how his colors come in but i feel bad when he flares at me every time im at the tank

I just got my betta a few days ago and he does the exact same thing. If I’m sitting at my desk right below his tank (I have a hutch over my desk that his tank sits one) he has no issues, or if I’m just in my room he doesn’t pay me any mind. AS SOON as I stand up and look in his tank he gets this big attitude with me. I’ve heard from others that it’s pretty normal especially for new bettas while they settle in and get used to you.
My mom swears by singing to her fish :’) maybe? Or offer treats when you watch him, I’ve seen people train their Bettas to jump and stuff! Might be worth looking into, give him something to think about lol

Probably reducing light if you can add more floating foliage or hope the ones you got start sprouting like wild like they will lol he seems like a character tho 😭
I do see a bubble nest in there maybe he’s just guarding it?
By any chance do you wear glasses or anything reflective? He may see his reflection and be reacting to it.
He said “you want a piece of this?!” 😭
That’s how mine started acting right 2 months before he got dropsy. The same time he stopped making bubble nests. I never understood why, until he started pineconing.
Some are just really really grumpy. Keith is especially grumpy and only likes me when I feed him once a day
