I had this big idea of keeping multiple colors of Neocaridina shrimp in the same tank so they can cross and create various colors, but have read that it actually doesn’t work this way and they eventually revert to their clear, natural color. Has anyone tried this? Are there any combinations that *do* work, or should I just stick to one color?

Nope does not work. If you want the colors, you’re going to have to stick with one single color type. I have a lot of various color genetics in my cull tank and the majority of the offspring are clear or wild type (brownish patterned). Occasionally I’ll get some weird colored offspring but it’s few and far between. There’s a reason that it’s standard to just keep one color type!

It’s called a skittle tank, which I do truly enjoy. They will muddy and turn to wild type, but I also like those! If you want your colors to stay true, you stick to one type. If you just like shrimp, do a skittle and top up on colors every once in a while. That’s my plan!

Yep you heard it right. Even if you keep one single colour they’re eventually going to become more brownish or transparent.

It can be done but eventually you’ll breed the colors out of the population and they will all turn brown.

If planning to sell or give to friends I’d advise not to do it. But for simple fish keeping needs and chill planted tanks, sure yeah go for it. I have a blue and red neos tank. Now I mostly have wild colors and 1 that is black.

I read that there are a few color lines whose crossbreeds also produce colored offspring. This applies to color morphs that originated from one another.

So, green shrimp were bred from orange ones. And having orange and green shrimp in the tank produces orange or green offspring.

Or there’s the black line. It includes brown shrimp, but also blue, red, and black-striped ones.

But I haven’t tested this myself yet.
