This MIGHT work with good planting and adding substrate, but the vertical height is an issue since they need horizontal patrolling space
Yes. As bad as it feels. Maybe worse.
To me this looks like it might be a 5 gallon tall. Which for a betta is not ideal, they prefer long tanks to tall since they need to swim up to breathe air. This setup is not a good one as there is no substrate, heater, filter, or enough plants/ decor for the fish to feel comfortable. If you do rescue him, you’ll want to look into how to do a fish in cycle and you’ll want to get an API freshwater test kit and Seachem prime to condition the water. Just know that you will probably be spending a good amount of money on a proper set up.
Assuming the betta’s body is approximately 5 cm long, I estimated the current water volume in this aquarium to be 25×25×25cm, or a little over 15.5L.I just calculated the current water volume and didn’t take into account that the line isn’t straight. I assumed that the container was square.
So basically, yes, it’s too small, and anyway the aquarium isn’t long enough, and it’s completely empty
Honestly, it’s a tank, it’s a good start there. Needs a header, filter, silk or live plants (plastic ones cut the fins), and longfin bettas need more horizontal than vertical space. A study “Life in a fishbowl” also shows the minimum tank requirement for most behavior is 8gal (based only on a 10 minute observation period though, assume 10g minimum)
Ok so it looks like a 3.5 gal or a 4 gal stand up and yes it’s not very good right now but it could be as long as you get a filter you can buy one from petsmart or petco or local fish supply or online whatever maybe a hang over back filter those are easy to use but you might have to block the output of water with a sponge or something because those currents are strong for long finned bettas also you will need a 25 watt heater that goes inside the tank and suction cups to the inside wall I’ll attach a link. Also your going to need some gravel or substrate either just gravel or sand or aqua soil and sand up to u and then some real plants easy ones to keep alive are java fern any kind and Anubias anything you just glue them to drift wood or decor or rocks anything fake should be silicone or silk another nice thing to have is a betta leaf that you suction cup inside your tank three or 4 inches from the top and a lid for ur tank so your betta does jump out. A nice water product to have is prime and stability and api stress coat plus i live by those three and last a api water testing kit and you will have a great home for your betta
I think this tank is an 8x8x12 (by my eye’s guesstimate). So pretty bad, the fish doesn’t have much horizontal swim space.

Don’t feel bad look what I’ve gotten myself into. You have to start somewhere.
UPDATE: I am picking up this beautiful guy tomorrow! the current owner was super sweet and felt terrible – she knocked down the price for me since I told her I will be upgrading his tank. his fins used to be so full and red tipped.. I’m hoping I can get him back to his beautiful self! (this is a picture of when she first got him)

thanks again!! everyone’s comments were super helpful and reassuring. I’m so excited to be a betta owner again!!
If it were long instead of tall it wouldn’t be so bad but this is ass yeah
it has no heater or filter so definitely a problem regardless of the size.
Yes
