Hey all thanks for the look – I’m new to fishing, but recently got hooked (lol). I’m headed to Baja for 9 days in the seven sisters area, and want to target halibut and rockfish, but realistically anything I can make a taco out of. I’ve also been crab snaring with mixed success on baker and muir beach. Building a kit to bait soak while I more actively cast for rockfish on muir beach, deadman’s, and cavallo point, but hoping to add stripers and halibut to the list as I get out of crab season.
I went a bit wild getting set up, I want to make the most of this trip to Baja and honestly this stuff is cheap compared to outfitting the truck and camping, or buying surfboards… I used Claude to help me organize my tackle inventory and I feel pretty prepared for my scenarios (Baja points and beaches, rock holes, and my Bay Area spots).
Sense check? Am I approaching this right, do I have the right kit? I tend to way over-prepare… i’ve been watching a lot of of rock fish videos from fisherman’s life, Benjie Kim’s Baja halibut videos, and talking to AI a lot about it, which feels like it could very easily take me down a strange path here.
I’m trying to get set up both to fish locally and in Baja, but bait availability will be difficult in Baja as I will be extremely remote. I like the approach of using Lucky crafts for halibut and jigs for rockfish, as well as spoons and cast Masters for opportunistic big fish that come near shore. I also have some larger Sabki rigs. I plan to use to see if I can get some live bait off the rocks.
Here’s the very tidy, but slightly weirdly organized spreadsheet that AI made for me – any thoughts would be hugely appreciated!
