Hi all!

My wife and I recently got a betta fish. When we got it we were told it was a female. However, it has longer fins than what I’ve seen in females thus far and we got home to it having made a bubble nest.

Anyway, we were hoping to add some friends in the tank and knowing the gender might help us choose what type of fish to house with it. It was previously in a tank with neon tetras and was doing fine and showed no interest nor agression towards them.

FYI not a sick fish just being accustomed to water temperature in a floating Tupperware as the bag had some issues staying up in the tank.

Definitely male. Being mislabeled is fairly common in big-box pet stores (or just in general; stores that aren’t focused on fish)

And when it comes to potential tank mates; what size is the tank?

If you want to try tankmates, have a backup tank on standby. I got a female because they said a female would be better suited for a community tank. Well she has lost all roommate privileges except for a nerite snail (they are built like tanks and I don’t think he realizes she exists). But she chased and harassed my amanos and neon green rasboras and bite the feeler off my mystery snail, all while in a 10 gallon so heavily planted I was worried the rasboras didn’t have enough swimming space. Now she’s alone in a 10 gallon and the rest are in a 30g.

Going to give her another shot at a community tank when I get my 48 gallon set up, but I will keep her 10g on standby because I don’t trust her.

Also she makes bubble nests and is a female, so that isn’t automatically a sign
