So I recently posted a tiktok of me setting up my 5 gallon cube it’s a heavily plant tank and I got my first hate comment like two weeks later in short terms, calling me an idiot and saying that my tank was WAY
too small.
when I replied saying something along the lines of “I am planning on upgrading to a 10 gallon I just need to save up enough money for a dresser that can withstand the weight of more then what I have”
which won’t be for a while and I assumed since 5 gallon is the minimum for a long fine it would be fine. she then replies again saying I clearly didn’t do my research if I think a 10 gallon is even ok I should have a 20 gallon minimum. Am I being trolled or something? (I am currently cycling and do not have a fish btw)

20 minimum is wild. i always believed in a 10gal minimum but lately im not sure with my boy and his long fins. hes struggling a little bit and i would even downsize if he werent such a big guy.
5 is fine dude. I had long fins live over 5 years in big bowls back in the day. It’s a better life than they’ll get in 90 percent of their potential forever tanks.
Nice setup
Looks like a nice home. Just make sure to have a proper heater, filtration, and keep on top of water quality as in a small tank it can go sideways quickly.
Yes .
Honestly, I have kept bettas in 5 gallon tanks and they’ve thrived. It all depends on how you manage the tank, and this setup looks beautiful. I think a betta, especially a long fin betta would love this tank. In my experience, bettas with long tails tire out more easily and appreciate a shallower tank anyways. I would recommend though at least getting some floating plants or a glass lid of some sort to prevent a future betta from jumping out. Otherwise, this will be just fine. There will always be people out there hating on you for one thing or another, but as long as you are ensuring your animal is happy, healthy and well taken care of, their opinions do not matter.
I personally wouldn’t go smaller than 10 gallon for a betta and absolutely only a long fin in that. I keep my betta in 30 gallon which feels small with the amount of exploring and swimming they do. I do run heavily planted and ensure the set up is appropriate. For me, it’s about how much space and enrichment they have to spend the years of their lives – they are intelligent creatures with excellent eyesight and curiosity. I think how bored I would get if I was spending my entire life in one small room pacing.
Your tank is set up well and a million times better than a lot of the tanks twice, even three times the size commonly seen on here with poor rotting betta trapped inside. I would say it’s at the absolute minimum tank size, but it’s not bad – often people start with a small tank. I would absolutely not put a short fin betta or any other fish in here though.
Bettas can live in a 2.5 gal if you REALLY know what your doing
5 is fine
You’d never see the fish in a 20 gal.
Your tank is absolutely gorgeous and a betta can absolutely live there long term. A 5 gal is typically better than a 10 gal actually for long fined betta as it provides more space to rest and it’s easier for them to get up to the surface to breath.
A betta would love this tank
