I’m getting my 3 year old a betta fish, after months of her begging. I also am very excited! I haven’t had fish since I was a kid and I’m really eager to do it right. Looking for advice on what to add to make the tank as best as it can be. It’s a low flow filter, heated to 78, cycled with filter media (that’s the blue bag) from a friends established tank so the water tests have been coming back perfect. The plants are silk, the castle has no sharp edges/pieces inside or out. I also have a beta log coming in the mail. I know they thrive with real plants and that’s something I’d like to do down the line but for now I’m keeping it synthetic. I also am going to add more water but kept it a little lower for the initial cycle. I plan on getting the fish this weekend so anything I can do to prep before then?

  1. Not much else to be done. Just watch how much you’re feeding and keep up with good weekly water changes to keep things fresh. Make sure its out of any direct sunlight or you may deal with some algae issues

  2. Pyromethious on

For simplicity, I’d look into adding a couple “banana” plants if you can find them. They just sit at the bottom (eventually will self-root) and eventually send up lily pads. That would keep from cluttering up the tank (if you’re trying to keep it “clean looking”) and they’re pretty self-sufficient.

  3. I honestly love it!! Can’t wait to see what betta you get! Sounds like you’ve done everything right. Nothing wrong with going all synthetic. I have had both those silk plants in my tanks and they’re good.

Only thing you could do to add if you wanted, would be to get a lower level resting spot, (any kind of wide/flat decor or smooth rock) especially if you end up getting a longer/fuller finned Betta. I only say this because I have a betta who has a very long heavy tail and he sometimes just would rather lay on the bottom of the tank to rest rather than swim up higher.
