I want to fix my tank for my betta fish. I want it to have plants so it looks more natural, and maybe some other fish too. My tank is 5 gallons and right now it only has some rocks and fresh water. I used to have a better setup with a heater and some snails, but they died after my filter broke. I had to remove the old rocks and decorations because they had algae on them. Can anyone tell me what I should buy to make my tank look nice again? 🙏.

Hi OP, you need a filter and heater urgently. These are mandatory items. Other improvements would be filling the tank up so it’s 5 gallons of water, and adding plants. Easy plants include java ferns, anubias, guppy grass – none of these need planting in the substrate but grow happily just in water and would quickly improve what is a bare and depressing tank.

Betta basic care sheets would be a good place to start:

  2. did i misunderstand or are you saying you don’t have a heater and filter? get both asap. for decoration, get some natural features like large smooth rocks and driftwood (avoid sharp edges and no holes as betta like to squeeze into them). and then PLANTS. highly preferably live plants if you can, and a good amount of them. if you can’t, get silk plants (not plastic). you need ones with large leaves for him to rest on. you can also get some sort of betta hammock to put near the surface for him to rest. you also need some hides. basically you want it to be nice and shady and cosy in there, bettas get stressed in empty open water
