I got a betta yesterday, his name is Bibble. I’m posting this just to be proactive because I want Bibble to have a good life and make sure he’s healthy. Does anyone have any advice?

I noticed he doesn’t seem to like the light and he hides underneath the filter. I’m planning on getting water lettuce and duckweed as well so he has more places to rest and hide.

I also gave him a rooibos tea bath. The pet shop recommended it and I did some research beforehand. I made sure the tea was 100% plain rooibos and caffeine-free, with no additives.

Are there any things I should add that I might not have yet? Any plants, enrichment, or things bettas really enjoy?

Also, are there any common mistakes new betta owners make that I should avoid?

Any advice would be appreciated. I just want to make sure Bibble has the best life possible.

Bibble seems to be okay. He is just adjusting to a new environment. Most fish, and bettas, usually hide in stuff before actually showing themselves. And he doesn’t like the light simply because he is adjusting from life in a cup where there was rarely any light to a tank that has a light. Bibble is okay, just adjusting to a new environment.

    EDIT:

    Tank Size
    15 gallons / 60L

    Tank Age
The tank has been running for about a month. I recently switched to a bigger tank.

    Fish Age in Tank
I’ve had the betta for less than a day.

    Temperature
I do have a heater, but I’m not using it right now because we are having a heatwave. The water temperature is about 75°F.

    Filtration
    The tank has a filter.

    Water Parameters
I don’t currently know the parameters yet because I ordered water testing kits and I’m waiting for them to be delivered. I will test for ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH.

    Water Changes
I do water changes once a week, usually about 25%–50%.

    Tank Mates
3 spotted corydoras and 2 ramshorn snails.

    Food
The pet shop provided fish flakes and small pellets. I’m not sure of the brand.

    Feeding
I feed twice a day and try my best not to overfeed. No

You’re doing great. This guy is going to live a happy life. For tips, test your water at least once per week, and don’t trust the test strips; try to buy a liquid test kit.
Lastly, don’t use Melafix or bettafix medications. Even though they are marketed towards bettas, they are dangerous for labyrinth breathers due to the oils in them. Try to have a few safe medications on hand to ensure you have the means to treat common bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections. That way if he gets sick, you’re not scrambling to find the right medication or waiting on delivery while he’s declining. Always best to be prepared.
Those are two of the most overlooked issues I’ve seen with betta care. If you want med recommendations or any other advice, feel free to ask. 🙂 Good luck!
