Hello, I got a 47lb 12 foot fishing kayak and I am buzzing excited. And I want to go solo, and my moms car has roof racks, but it don’t go far out to the side enough to do the strap method. And I am wondering how scratch proof this method with bath mat is since my mom has a nice car and she wouldn’t be happy if I scratch the car. And if you have recommendations for me it would be lovely.

Depends on the thickness of the bath mat
Also, moving blanket might be better as well since they are bigger and cheaper
It should avoid any scratches if it’s clean.
Any sand and it would still end up scratching.
But I’m also worried about the roof itself, just placing it on the bare roof could leave dents.
It’s just a sheet of metal, not designed to hold any weight.
I’d rather invest into a proper roof rack that fits, or a kayak trailer.
+ trailer will be useful later on when you have your own car, get a heavier kayak.
Or even when you want to launch at a boat ramp.
Good luck and happy fishing!
Hey man, I have an AudiA4 Avant that I love… and I also have a fishing kayak that I love. I have to solo mount and dismount my yak on the roof racks whenever I take it out. I just use two bath towels that I put down in the middle and then I just take my time slowly moving the kayak. It’s fine and hasn’t ever led to any scratches, but just take your time and if it doesn’t feel right, stop and check it before continuing
I used the bath mat method to load my Old Town kayak onto my Honda Passport. It’s a heavy kayak, and once it slipped and the bath mat moved with it and now I have a scratch. I use the roller method and load from the back now – much easier and no need for bath mats.
