I’ve only hooked into little tiny guys before. Just curious. Such an ugly fish.

That’s a ~~creek~~ hornyhead chub. Males get those horns on their head when they get larger. And he thinks you’re ugly, too. Please be nice to the practice trout.

    Those would be Nuptial tubercles.

They are something that appear on spawning male fish. Supposedly it has something to do with showing off health and attracting mates.

  3. That’s not a Creek Chub, it doesn’t have a black dot on its dorsal fin.

It is a species of chub in the Nocomis Genus, hornyhead chubs! Location will help determine Species

Edit: just to clarify, it’s not a Hornyhead Chub, it’s a member of a group called Hornyhead Chubs. Another commenter said Bluehead Chub based on tubercle patterns

  4. Others have answered your question. I just want to say solid choice of rooster tail. My very favorite for creek fishing.

Creek Chub males get horny during the spring. Teeheehee

But, for real, they’re called tubercles and grow in during spawning for fighting off potential competition for mates.

This is a bluehead chub from the tubercle patter and red eye, definitely not a creek chub though they can also get tubercles as will most minnows
