I had a short window to get out the other evening so I targeted some likely water on my home river, where I can almost always get into fish. Starting at a bend in the river, I rustled up some rainbows and whitefish on a double nymph rig; then switched over to a pine squirrel jig streamer and moved upstream to a glide under a cutbank. I’ve put some nice browns to the net in this spot over the winter.
I worked a few drifts out across the current to slower water and twitched the rig with my rod tip when this solid brown trout smacked the fly just after sunset. Those head shakes are unmistakable.
Running hard, the fish put a good bend in my rod and made a few jumps as I fought it across the channel and to my net. Just a fantastic short evening session as the light faded from an orange ochre on the silhouettes of the pines up to a deep navy at dusk.
