  1. • Tank size: 14 gallon
    • Heater and filter? (yes/no): yes
    • Tank temperature: 77
    • Parameters in numbers and how you got them. Key water parameters include the amount of ammonia (0) nitrites (0) nitrates (5) and pH (7.5)
    • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: almost 2 months and betta today
    • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: only top off water so far
    • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: 8 neon tetras but they are scared and don’t annoy betta

  2. Heavy breathing on the first day is often more about stress or water conditions than just reflection.
Make sure your temperature is stable (around 78–80°F) and check ammonia if possible. Reflection can stress him, but it usually doesn’t cause heavy breathing by itself.
You can also try dimming the lights or adding more plants to reduce reflection for now.
Do you have an air pump or airstone? Increasing dissolved oxygen can help with heavy breathing.

  3. Not an expert, but heavy breathing can be a lot of things. You said it’s his first day, did you just put him in? Moves are pretty stressful for fish, so it’s possible he’s just stressed out and needs time to settle. This is especially the case if you didn’t slowly acclimate him to the new water, since sudden changes in chemistry are very stressful as well. Dimming the lights can help with stress and with reducing reflections, and plants are also a great way to block reflections and add some hiding spaces. Have you noticed him gasping for air at the surface at all? That could indicate low oxygen in the water. Also, how did you measure the parameters? Numbers look good, but good results from test strips can’t always be trusted.
