Does anyone have experience keeping these rare and beautiful fish? I recently brought home a male-female pair of parosphromenus linkei, or the moonspot licorice gourami. They're set up in a dark, soft, acidic blackwater tank – theoretically their perfect habitat… And so far they're doing great! I've experienced no problems. This post is not a cry for help!

What I do need, though, is for anyone who has experience keeping this fish to weigh in and tell me about your experience. Many sources online state that licorice gourami only take live food, and while I'm fully prepared to meet this need – is it even true? This pair of moonspots was in my local aquarium store for a month at the very least and they arrived to me in beautiful condition…after spending that whole month in a bright, neutrally-acidic tank eating frozen tubifex worms. In fact, I've seen them take these worms myself in my own tank. The store had lots of them, and they were all seemingly doing great, especially for a storefront tank! Are these fish more adaptable than the information one can find online suggests?

As I said, my pair is doing well and I am prepared to meet their needs as described by even the more stringent guidelines online, but I can't help but wonder how much of the popular information around this fish's hardiness is completely mythologized.

Has anyone tried to keep parosphromenus and failed? Has anyone had great success? Dan's Fish says they've been thriving in his hard, basic water even, which seems so monumentally backwards from the information you can find from The Parosphromenus Project's website that I'm left scratching my head. What's the truth here?
