Went to petco and saw this baby boy. i asked if he could be surrendered to me but they said no because he just got here. I do not want to buy the fish because I don’t want to support petco. There was also a baby girl fish. How likely is it that they will be okay?

  1. Babies are difficult. I only tried to care for one once (cycled tank, acclimated, sponge filter with low flow, plenty of plants) and even though this baby did appear to be super young, it died the next day for whatever reason. Not sure if it was because the tank was too big (10 gal). Never tried with a baby again. I suspect whatever lay person will come across this likely wouldn’t know any better, and I wouldn’t even trust with an adult betta. People not on here very much still have the “stick them in a bowl” mentality.

I don’t think she will survive but the on the other hand I saved animals under crazy circumstances. I would try. Get a set to breed some baby artemia (I forgot what the actual name is). Tank with clean, warm water, low water level, some plants. Feed it several times a day with the baby artemia, use a pipette.

  3. situations like this are so hard because we know the staff will have to fill his spot with another (likely sickly) fish, but you can’t help but feel heartbroken for the poor things 🙁

So iv noticed they give you a free fish if you walk in with an empty 32 oz cup and just put him in that 🤷‍♀️ (im joking, I don’t condone this behavior 😏)

he definitely won’t survive ,, baby bettas need atleast 10 gallons otherwise they are likely to drown in their hormones. And in this small of a space he’s screwed.

It depends on your location, at my local one probably 5 or 6ish years back I got a baby girl in pretty good condition, not sure how long she was there but unless they got her older it had to be more than a week since she was a lot bigger than the other babies

Fed her ground up pellets and flakes cause I couldn’t find anything better at the time, she grew up into a beautiful blue and red lady, if i remember correctly she lived for 3.5 years, which is more than I expected for a petco betta (usually a lot of bad breeding stuff)

Tldr: It depends on the staff where you are, my local one took good care of them so he might have a chance

  7. If you don’t shop there otherwise just take it. They’re not allowed to stop you and it’s not worth enough to charge you with anything.

Not condoning theft. Or am I.

  8. You went to petco but you dont want to support petco?

Why did you go in the first place
