Hey, I recently lost my boy Peter about a week ago. This week, I checked the tank while doing a water change and all of my shrimp (6) were dead. My mystery snail (and other little snails) are all still fine. Nothing new was added to the tank recently, the water levels have been checked and are normal, no smells or weird algae or anything. Two days or so before he passed, I noticed his fins looking clamped and he definitely had low energy and was hanging out at the top of the tank. The last photo is him right before he passed. (Fins are a little torn because of some ex-roomies who nipped at him)

I loved my boy dearly and im genuinely heartbroken over this. I’ve had him for less than a year and he was originally from a petco (five finger discount, don’t ever support) im not expecting to get a definite answer, but does anyone else have a similar experience, or know what could’ve caused this? What should I do/check for to make sure the tank stays healthy, and how long should I wait before introducing any new creatures to the tank?

Tank is 5 gal, sponge filter, all live plants and rocks/wood/sand and a heater. He was a happy boy and I want to know what I did wrong 🙁

so sorry to hear that. Shrimp are very sensitive to sudden changes in water, is it possible that any chemical came into contact with the tank?
I’ve also heard that sometimes tap water/whatever water source u use can change in its parameters, for example sometimes there might be a little bit of ammonia.

Any lotion/soap/perfume/cleaning products etc left on your hand can kill a shrimp tank

I’m wondering if maybe the one had a bacterial infection how long did you have the shrimp before the betta or the betta before the shrimp ? Because someone can be sick and spoil the tank for everyone
