I've been cycling a 30 litre (about 7 gallons) tank for a few days, but the spider wood hasn't released any tannins like in my other tank with driftwood. I heard that you can boil oak leaves and add the water, is that true? I don't really want to spend any money but it seems like I might have to :/

  1. Tannins are easy and everywhere.
The oak leaf method works well.
    Alder cones work work too.

Depending on where you live you can use quite a few different leaves, so long as they are long dead.

  2. Alder cones are super effective. It is often found near water, and this time of year the cones should still be on the trees for picking. I went out one day and filled a sandwich bag which will last forever. In a tank like that only 4-5 cones will noticeably change the water colour
