Got this medium heavy casting rod with a baitcaster to throw frogs and topwater lures. I made the mistake of buying 50 lb braid before I knew that test lbs mattered; in use it casts perfectly fine, but maybe only 20' max with 1/4 oz-1 oz lures. It reels quite fast, and I don't feel I'm getting far enough out. The rod is incredibly stiff, as you'd expect for fast action MH.

Curious if the line is most likely what's costing me casting length, or do I really need to make sure I'm just throwing heavy enough stuff? My lures are more on the 1/2 oz side.

It could be a lot of things. The first thing I would check is your brake and spool tension settings on your reel.

The line could be contributing too. Many people use 50lb braid but it is thicker than needed and will reduce casting distances… especially if it’s cheap braid.

Sounds like a brakes issue more than anything else. Your tension knob adjusts how easily the spool *starts* rotating when you cast and the brakes are, well, brakes for the end of your cast. I pretty much have my brakes on 0 and use my thumb

Edit to add: the general recommendation for frogging is 50-65 pound braid, it’s not because of the line
