Hi there,

I recently got my very first betta around 2 weeks ago. Got the tank all cycled and planted, and ended up with snails and two ghost shrimp in my plant order. ( So he's got friends, I guess)🙄

Has anyone downgraded their tanks? He's currently in a 10-gallon but doesn't actively use it. I've tried a lower-flow air pump filter because I thought the hang-back one might be sucking him in or causing him to swim poorly. He still didn't use the rest of the tank, but almost seemed to be looking for the hang back? I put it back, and he's been chilling next to it. He goes to the bottom of the tank, but really stays on the side with the filter. Maybe he's shy? I don't know if he's like “Whoa, so much space” since he was in a tiny cup when I got him?

His parameters have been stable, and I’ve got tannins in the water. Is there something I'm missing?

Bettas can be very curious and are naturally hunters. Maybe try putting plants that have large leaves, some floating plants and some hides (like a betta hammock.) It’s could be he is bored. Absolutely stunning boy!!

Maybe he needs more clutter to feel secure. A bit of tannins in the water might help too so I’m glad you’re doing that 🙂

  3. To be honest, my betta has proven to me that as long as the water quality and temperature are good, a 5 gallon tank is sufficient for him. My betta resides in a 5 gallon tank but he doesn’t use the entire space daily.

  4. I have a long finned betta and he’s always swimming in the plants. I often can’t even see him because he smushes himself into the leaves. He doesn’t swim around that much, mostly just hangs out in the plants. In the photo he’s in the top just to the left of the center, you can’t even really see him.

If he’s not an explorer I’m sure he would be fine in a 5gal, I would make the choice based on your preferences.
