I’ve been so paranoid lately about my fish. He tore a little bit of his fin a little while ago, but I’m now worried about fin rot. The water levels are good, the temp is at 81*F, I just replaced a good chunk of my black gravel substrate with sand (there’s still a layer under the sand). He also has had this curled front fin with a crease in it, I’m not too sure what that’s about.

I bought him from petsmart in December, I’m not sure if that heightens the chance of him getting sick or not. I’ve been doing as much research as I can but I just can’t help but be worried. I do weekly water changes (sometimes I slack off but I try to be fluent with it), i have a heater and a filter, it’s a 10gal and the parameters are in the okay zone at all times.

Please excuse the minimal plant life as well, I had to take a few of my plants out as they melted and I’m going to be adding more soon.

Any tips or suggestions? Thank you so much.

I also included his first ever BIG big flare (: he didn’t like the camera lens, lol..

  1. I do have a beta too, but I’m not really an expert, but I recommend getting some plants for him like floaters or moss

Hi OP, I noticed you said you’ve changed your substrate. Keep a close eye on your water parameters for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate as a lot of the good bacteria live in the substrate. They grow attached to surfaces like your filter material, substrate and the walls of the tank, and are not really found in the water so that wouldn’t have really done much.

It should be okay, but please monitor just in case your nitrogen cycle has a hiccup or mini blip/ stall.

For plants a great floating and robust one is guppy grass (Najas guadalupensis). It’s extremely happy floating, doesn’t need planting, betta love it and it is excellent for consuming nitrates from the water.

Awww he is so cute especially in his little tunnel!!!! I just bought a baby veil tail female from petsmart and she is SO CUTE! I’m also hoping I’m doing all the right stuff!

He looks beautiful! Sometimes a rip can be prone to turning to fin rot but as long as the water quality is good, he should be alright 💗 I’m not seeing any at the moment, just be on the lookout for the edges starting to fray and rot more towards the middle. He seems happy, he has great fin growth, you’re getting some more plants in there, AND you care about giving quality care! I think it sounds like you’re checking all the boxes.
