Hi everyone. I got my first tank. I’ve been wanting one for a year or two now, any my partner got me a gift card for my birthday. So maybe not the most top notch supplies, but this is planted tank I came up with.
Started with treated water, and have been monitoring temp and chemical levels for a 2 weeks now. So far, so good.
I’ve been stupidly shocked at how dark the water became from the tannins, but overall I’m excited to see how the plants grow
It’s a 20 gal tank. Would this be too big for a betta?
Advice and ideas welcome.

Too big doesn’t really apply to most animal enclosures but ill say two things about bettas. Bettas love plant cover. It’ll take time for plants to grow in, but id also add some floating plants to fill in the top portion of the tank. Also, there is some thought that long finned bettas do better in smaller tanks.
Bettas are a great beginner fish, but with something like a twenty id probably do a tastefully stocked nano community tank personally. Corydoras are very charismatic bottom dwellers and then some tetras or live bearers (platies are my favorite) to occupy the top portion of the tank. Snails and shrimp are fun additions as well.
Hiya op~~ A 20 gal tall would be great for a betta not too big at all honestly i would suggest a shorter finned betta like a double tail a galaxy koi female or other, mainly because long fin bettas like elephant ears have a hard time getting to the surface to get air! 🙂
I also would really suggest a floating log and a betta hammock my boy loves his 20 gallon tank also I would also agree with the other comment about floaters they make my tank look really nice Imo!, and the tannis are a great addition!! 🙂 make sure your adding fertilizer for the plants 😉
i also seen the comment about fish! I personally would say i dont suggest fish tank mates because its a tall tank and not a long tank and with many fish (mainly schooling fish) they like long rather than tall especially because nanos are schooling fish and if your bettas territorial they have more space to hide/get out of the bettas area ^(^) of course it also depends on the bettas temper and how wide and planted the tank is, when it comes to other fish but in my !!opinion!! I would add maybe a school of 6 maybe more Cory’s if you want some bottom feeders and also i would suggest shrimp i love my shrimps and maybe some snails! :)) this is my tank with 2 mysterys multiple rams and bladders, skittle shrimp and ofc the star of the show my betta pretty boy
