If you aren’t routinely cleaning and dressing your lines – you should. A line that’s well taken care of will perform a lot better, and last significantly longer before needing replacement.

I recently came up with a new strategy I wanted to share. Previously, I used to pull all the line off the reel, put it in a soapy bucket, run it through a dry paper towel as I reeled it back in, then pull it off again and apply a dressing. This resulted in a lot of tangles and took too much time, so I wasn’t cleaning my lines very often.

What I do now is, pull 2 feet of line off the reel. Tie it to a tree. Walk 60-70 feet while keeping the line taut and then tie it to another object, so it’s suspended in the air. Then, just walk back and forth while running the line through a soapy paper towel until no more dirt comes off. Run it through a dry towel, and then run it through a towel with line dressing.

Takes about 2 minutes per line and is less of a hassle than any other method I’ve tried – so I’m actually doing it before my fishing trips.
