My husband and I have had fish for almost two months now. One thing we did not think of or expect – babies.

A few weeks ago, my husband noticed something tiny darting about the tank. We realized quickly that we had babies, and got a mesh enclosure for our tank to move them to. There’s currently 8 (only 7 we’ve been able to get in the mesh) in the tank, but we can’t figure out what kind they are, or if there’s a mix.

We currently have mollies (dalmatian, black velvet, and gold dust) as well as some assorted platys (as well as some cory catfish to help with cleanup). The babies range in coloring from mainly redish/orange (like 2 of our platys), orangish/yellow and black (like our gold dust mollies), and black (like our black velvet).

We honestly have no idea who had the babies. Is it possible any of them could have mixed? How long does it generally take them to grow? At what point is it safe for them to go back into gen pop?

Oh you’re about to have lots of babies.

I have platies and they’re multiplying like rabbits. I’m letting the babies do their thing in the community tank and will donate to the LFS once they’re large enough.

  2. Mollies and platys both breed prolifically, though they won’t interbreed.

My suggestion, get a second tank with a large cichlid, like an Oscar to handle the overflow. Most fish stores don’t want bunch of Molly and platy fry.

  3. You gotta start a compost pile to start growing tiny worms to feed the baby fish, but then you’re gonna have too many fish and you will have to get chickens to feed the excess. You eat the chicken, but this contractually binds you to be buried in your compost pile
