I am currently cycling my new 750litre. The tank came with black and red gravel I think it's flourite. The gravel peices are too big (about 1-1.5cm) I am going to be doing a heavily planted tank and planting in it will be a pain. I'm planning to just add a layer (4-5cm) on top of the existing substrate.

I know of people using black diamond blasting sand however that is not available where I live. I would need fo buy a different brand.

Is there any risks with blasting sand not being fish safe?

It might be made of silica, the blasting media we use at work is silica based. There’s also glass bead blasting media too.

If I was you, id look for pool filter sand, its dirt cheap (pun intended) and usually quite clean, (cause its for filters) so there’s less washing before use.

I picked up a 25kg bag for less than 5 dollars at the local hardware store
