Haven’t done much fishing since high school. I used to fish at a local pay lake that stocked trout. Back then it was just me my friend a couple rods and some power bait. Can anyone catch me up on the modern day necessities for shoreline lake trout fishing. Lures, lines, bait? Im looking at this rod reel combo, seems to fit the modern criteria any thoughts on it?

That rod looks nice. Should work for most types of fishing styles. But if you are going to be using the tiniest lures like the 1/32 oz tube jigs then I’d say go ultralight rather than light power. But light will work for most everything else. It may give you more confidence with throwing heavier weights with heavier line when fishing with bait too.

Most people by me swear by ultralight rods and using micro spoons 1-2g in weight and about 1 to 1 1/2 inches long. And the tube jigs 1/32 oz and 1/16 oz

For powerbait or micetail baits any rod will do. Just be sure to match the lures you use to the rod’s specs if you plan to go that route.
