This is casper, he lives in a heavily planted 5 gallon and hes super curious and active! The issue is that my mom sees his curiosity as friendlyness and wants to get him a bunch of tank mates.. mind you this is a 5 gallon tank that i am taking care of not her. Shes brought up the idea of many different varietys all of which needed like 20 gallons and i told her no especially bc they like groups
Well yesterday my mom came home and "surprised" me with 5 cherry shrimp and a single stone catfish – while i love the fish she brought home, overnight we are left with 3 shrimp and a stone catfish, my bigest issue however is the fact that the catfish should be kept in groups but if we got more this tank would be seriously overstocked and idk what to do
I have another tank with a betta, corys, and ottos and the tank is much larger but the tank cant really healtily stock more fish and we dont have space for another tank, what should i do?

Return them to the pet store if you’re able too, and this is a bit morally wrong but I would tell your mother all of them died. If she thinks you just returned them to the pet store she might decide to get more again and believe that you’re ‘overreacting’.
Give the fish back to your mum or ask her to pay for your third tank.
No joke, otherwise next week she will visit you with a school oscars^^
You can always hopefully convince her to buy a bigger tank, the main thing that prevents them is usually the pet store price but you could definitely find bigger tanks on Facebook marketplace for cheaper. My suggestion is a 20 gallon
