This is mine and my wife and daughter first betta fish, I had one as a kid that just lived in a plastic bowl. Trying to give this Halfmoon double tail male a good life, in a 6 gallon tank.

  1. Congrats! Just got my first on Tuesday. Make sure you carefully watch water parameters if you’re doing a fish in cycle (ie didn’t cycle before)

Im glad you are inspired to give the little guy the best life possible 🙂 It looks like the tank was filled very recently. I highly recommend researching “fish in cycle.” Because it appears the tank was just filled (i can see the bubbles on the glass!), you will need to do 40-50% water changes daily for about 3-4 weeks to avoid ammonia build up from the fish waste- which can burn the fish, make it susceptible to infection, etc.
You will want to invest in the API freshwater master kit so you can test the water and track the cycles progress. The cycle js basically establishing bacteria that consume fish waste.
It seems daunting but its really not too bad 🙂
Also- sponge filter, air pump and tubing, heater to keep the tank 78 degrees (i recommend ordering one that you can set the temp- preset notoriously suck.) Ps- never get rid of your sponge filter or wash it out in the sink. A couple squeezes is plenty- the helpful bacteria live in the filter and the substrate, getting rid of it gets rid of the benefit and could crash the cycle!
Lots of plants would be ideal because they help clear waste, and provide hiding places that bettas love to explore. A “betta hammock” so he can rest near the top and take breaths of air easily.
There is a ton of info in this sub- just search the topic you are curious about and there will be a ton of helpful comments when newbies come here asking for advice.
I recommend fluval bug bites microgranules for food. They have protein as a primary ingredient. Common big store foods are not as high quality.
