Just picked up my first ‘yak. Looking to pick up a PFD for inshore saltwater and freshwater fishing.

I don’t know anything about life jackets so I’m not sure what style/type to get, what features I should look for, etc. Trying to keep things cheap without sacrificing safety.

I’d appreciate any recommendations or tips. Thanks in advance!

  1. Thank goodness you’re looking at protecting yourself! Hate seeing posters NOT wearing a PDF!
The front zippers failed on my Walmart buy… but the buoyancy rating is really good. $25, 3 years ago.

Astral Green Jacket. I feel so safe in mine and it’s comfortable. Pricey but worth it .

Check out the onyx fishing vest, $60, low profile and not bulky but great front pockets that even fold down into handy tables! I got a $140 fancy whatever and if a cat hadn’t pissed on it I’d without a thought switch back to the onyx because it’s just more comfortable yet equally (or more) functional

First off, good on ya for thinking about safety.

Fishing PFDs come with pockets. They’re useful. Get one with pockets. Also get one that’s comfortable. If it’s not comfortable, you’ll hate wearing it.

My old PFD was a Stohlquist Keeper, but I switched to an Astral Sturgeon last year. I would recommend the Sturgeon, but it sounds like it’s a just little outside of your desired budget.
