Hey everyone,
I recently got this black molly, and I’m pretty sure she’s pregnant. I wanted to ask experienced breeders here — how close do you think she is to giving birth?
From what I’ve observed:
Her belly has gotten quite big and looks more “squared” towards the back
She’s swimming normally but staying a bit calmer than others
No aggressive behavior, just staying with the group
I’m still learning, so I’d really appreciate your opinions 🙏
Also, sorry for the low quality images — my camera struggled to focus through the tank 😅
Thanks in advance!

  1. If she has squared off A LOT it could happen 25-48 hours if your lucky! Make sure you separate the fry immediately because she or other tank mates will eat all of them they can get to!! Usually female molly from pet stores come already pregnant! Lol prolific reproducers! I just wished they were prolific parents!

I just put my new panda molly I got yesterday from the store into an incubator separator tank inside my tank because she looks the exact same as your black Molly! (I just got 6 black mollies 2 days ago, 2 males 4 females and one of the. Already had babies yesterday morning. By the time I saw them swimming at the top back of my very well stocked tank, there were 7 left.) I am still waiting for my panda molly to actually give birth though. Hopefully she drops them babies by the time I take my drive to the school bus stop in the AM

  2. Just make sure you remove the babies right after they give birth. I really can not tell just from that photo. A video would help but one way to get a better idea is to keep an eye out for a small triangle to push out her “coochi” area that means she is fully dilated and about to start pushing them out it is eash to get a small plastic cup and sink it in the tank next to where the fry is at and they will suck right into the cup! It was super easy to get those 7 out of the tank even with 40 something other tank mates all trying to get a “snack” lol I wished I know how many my black Molly had, all I know is there were 7 left we I noticed them. I thought they were tadpoles at first seeing as how I have one male and three female African dwarf frogs. But no I’m pretty sure it was my black Molly if not it was my Dalmatian Molly those are the coolest fish ever I’m a blue wag my lace look pretty spectacular too…
