I’ve been running this setup for kayak hauling and finally got it dialed in.
Truck: [your truck]
Rack: Yakima Overhaul HD
Bed cover: Retrax XR
Why this combo works:
– Height clears cab for long kayaks
– Tonneau still usable and it locks
– Super stable at highway speed
– Bed rack height adjusts to match height of cab crossbar
Things I learned the hard way:
– Crossbar should be spaced appropriately so kayak won’t flex or warp
– Wind noise is real without fairing
– Weight distribution matters more than you think
If anyone is thinking about this setup, happy to answer questions.
