I have a fully cycled 5.5-gallon planted betta tank with a heater and an AquaClear 20 HOB filter. The tank houses only a single betta.

I test the water parameters every 3 days, and ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are always within normal range.

Despite that, I can never seem to achieve truly crystal-clear water. It consistently has a slight cloudy, whitish haze to it.

Maintenance-wise, I do weekly water changes of about 15–20%.

At this point, I’m trying to figure out what else might be causing the persistent haze and what additional steps I can take to improve water clarity.

This may or may not help u, but I know from gardening that u can get a free print out of your local water analysis. Must be something causing that. I know I had a real problem with biofilm and related issues until I got 5 ramshorn snails and 5 Mystery snails. They keep it all clean now. Good luck 🤞

It’s because cycling is only the very first most basic step towards establishing a tank. Especially in a small water volume such as 5g. A cycled tank isn’t necessarily established and stable.

Bacterial blooms are generally harmless as long as they somewhat clear up on their own and if it isn’t this bad. A bloom like this will need water changes more often than once a week, anybody I’d probably do more than 15-20% to bring it down so i suggest you start doing that. Are you doing or adding anything else to the tank?
