Hi guys, I live in northern Canada and do a lot of pike fishing. I have a few sage rods and a Scott out for repair but just pulled the trigger on a TFO BC Big fly 8wt.

Some might say an 8wt is underlined for big pike, typically I’m catching over 30” fish and landed half a dozen +40”s last year on a 9wt, I figured this rod would suit my needs and with a fast sinking line I should be able to hook into some spawning lakers this spring.

Just curious if anyone has flicked this stick and wondering what reel matches well with it.

I am between a 7/8 Ross Evolution LTX or a Nautilus X XL max. I am leaning towards nautilus because of the flexibility with being able to have a 6/7 or 8/9 spool. Thinking a lighter reel will work better since the rod is a true 9ft but has the extended handle and extended fighting butt, heavier at the bottom. I have no fly shops near by so unable to compare.

Please let me know if you have any experiences with any of these products!

  1. I have several Hatch reels and they really are top notch and extremely durable. Fresh and saltwater no issues. They are lifetime reels.
