His name is peeta. I am not at all a new fish owner, I’ve had many bettas over the years and plenty of other fish as well, and I have never seen one of my bettas with this issue. I feel so bad for him, anybody have any advice? Is this normal at all? Other than the flaring issue, he is very playful, loves to swim in the bubbles, lay out on plants, and get right up on the heater to get cozy.

No reason to feel bad for him! Very likely an old injury or deformity that doesnt have any effect on his quality of life or overall health 🙂
