I set up my 55g last month for the first time in months and started to notice this growth on a piece of driftwood last week, Ive kept fish for years and never noticed this before, any idea what it could be?

Biofilm. It’s harmless. It’s bacteria simply feeding off the remnants of sugars in your driftwood. It will die off and clear on its own once the sugars are depleted, in a few weeks. Fishes and snails love to eat it too. Nothing to worry about.

  2. I was told biofilm is more jelly/gelatinous-looking and the fuzzy stuff is fungus. I ended up taking my wood out and scrubbing it off and it smelled kinda gnarly.
