I have two thermometers in the tank (one far from heater and one next to it) and both seem to say 79°, but he spends most of his time just up against where the heater is. Wondering if that means there’s something wrong or just like it over there

NO2 & NO3 are hard to tell but both seem to be 0 or very close to it

Edit: forgot to add ammonia is below 0.25, close to 0 it looks like, and always is. Never seen bad parameter (assuming the current ones are fine). Normally change 1/3 the water every week, would do it more if needed but the parameters are always fine.

I don’t know is the real answer. The coloring doesn’t look good to me. Could just be the picture though. Seems pale. What do you feed him and what are his water parameters (if you didn’t already post those. I can’t remember but will reread it now)

Ok I reread. What’s his ammonia (I’m unsure of some of your abbreviations)

You should probably get a water test kit like the API, because test strips are not sufficient to solve an actual problem. You need more information and the API kit has the way to that information.

Hi OP, this looks like classic ammonia poisoning. Are you able to test for ammonia? Ammonia is super toxic, burns the skin, gills and fins of fish. He looks like he’s being badly impacted by it. He’s not being dramatic, he’s being burnt and poisoned by bad water quality.

Additionally, any level of nitrite is also toxic.

Please, invest in a liquid test kit that covers the full range of critical water quality parameters.

He needs urgent water changes to reduce the toxicity of the water he’s in. Immediate 50%, then daily until you can verify the water is safe for him.
